Balmoral, Scotland 1890. Artist: Albert Dunnington (1860-1941)
Published by Copyright Balmoral Prints 1990

Queen Victoria commissioned four paintings of her beloved Balmoral Castle. One painting for each different aspect of the castle, each to be in a different medium and painted by a different artist. This painting is the Oil medium, painted by the now well known artist Albert Dunnington. The painting never reached Queen Victoria as when it was finally completed, Albert Dunnington like many poor artists of his time, used the painting to pay for his lodgings at the Strathern Hotel in Fife. Since that time and despite many valued offers the original has remained in the same Scottish family. It is believed that other three paintings were purchased by Queen Victoria and have since then hung in Balmoral Castle as part of the Royal art collection.

Today Balmoral Castle is one of the Royal residences of Queen Elizabeth II and is the Royal family's summer retreat. Lying in the centre of its large estate, Balmoral Castle is located in the heart of Aberdeenshire in Scotland near to the Cairngorm Mountains. For centuries the castle has remained a favourite residence of the Royal family. It is a National icon of Scotland and manages to combine the functionality of a working estate with its high demand as a popular tourist attraction.
