Tell me a little bit about yourself.
I grew up in rural Hampshire as an active little explorer and adventurer. My background is in Science & Agriculture and I have instructed outdoor and mainstream sports and worked in the education and military sectors. I have trained working dogs and horses for 15 years and currently work as a beach lifeguard and first aid responder in the summer. I love adventure sports, the great outdoors, and spending time with our pack.
What got you into Mushing?
When I was eleven I was dragged down a road on my knees by a neighbour's couple of Alaskan huskies, leaving my crumpled bike in the middle of the road. You have to be either mad or commited to get up, heave the dogs back, collect the bike and get on for another go. I exercised those dogs for several years and have been bikejorring ever since, so I guess the move to mushing was inevitable.
Why Siberians?
Siberian Huskies only make up 5% of the sled dog world but they are custom designed for the job and haven't changed for 1000 years. I find them responsive, persistant and happy-go-lucky. I think our attitudes just "fit", making training all the more rewarding.
