Interview with the Mushers by Hu Sky. Hu Sky

Mel

Musher: Mel Andrews

Tell me a little bit about yourself.
I was born in Winchester. My background is in Science, Sport and Agriculture. I have instructed and managed rural and mainstream sports and previously worked with the education and military sectors. I have trained working dogs and horses for over 10 years. I love adventure sports, the great outdoors, and foreign travel
.

What got you into Mushing?
Looking back, I think I had the bug long ago. When I was 11 years old I was  dragged down a road on my knees by a neighbour's couple of Alaskans, leaving my crumpled bike in the middle of the road. You have to be either insane or commited to get up, heave the dogs back, collect the bike and get on for another go.

Nigel

Musher: Nigel Garner

Tell me a little bit about yourself.
I grew up in Cheltenham. I have a BA in Geography and a PGCE in Physical Education from Aberystwyth University. I currently work as a Teacher and Instructor but have also worked in the Publishing, Leisure and Transport industries. I like team sports and outdoor adventure.

What got you into Mushing?
I’ve handled working animals for years, the thrill and exilleration you get from a sled dog team is similar to the excitement of a galloping horse, the difference is the teamwork and interaction a sled dog team requires.  Siberian Huskies are such extraordinary athletes.

Mattportrait

Handler: Matt Bell

Matt started handling for us at the beginning of 2008. His experience with horses really helped him get to grips with handling the dogs and helping prepare the big team for longer runs. He listens and absorbs information and has progressed well on the rig, coming 4th with Valour/Fox in his first race.
